Food and Restaurants in Indonesia
Restaurants in Indonesia reflect the country's massive variety of influences and cultures. Much of the character of the food has its origins in the food of Java – nasi goreng (fried rice) is the signature dish.
Namaaz Dining – Jakarta
It’s as much a spectacle as a feast for the senses. Dishes are served in all kinds of receptacles. While the décor is simple and modern, mystery remains one of the kitchen’s greatest strengths (it also resembles a chemistry lab more than a restaurant kitchen). In the same way you wouldn’t want spoilers before you go to the cinema, Namaaz has no menu. The less you know, the better.
Namaaz Dining plays with guests’ expectations, keeping you on your toes throughout the meal. Even once you work out what each dish is, the next part is working out how best to eat it.
Warung Tujuh – Kuta
A small storefront with outdoor seating, Warung Tujuh’s service is swift and friendly. Efficient enough to serve as a pit-stop, but nice enough that you’ll be happy to linger. When you return to the tourist trail, you’ll do so with a full stomach and money to spare.
The Restaurant, Padma Hotel – Bandung
The layout takes in the scenery from all angles, whether you’re dining inside or out on the terrace complete with atmospheric lighting. The food is generally served buffet-style which allows you to mix-and-match to taste and eat at your own pace.
The lush hill views are what make The Restaurant a must for travellers looking for an atmospheric dining experience. Open daily for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, and dinner, it’s best to arrive in daylight to savour the view.
Kayu Manis Café & Homestay – Sanur
A small, unassuming restaurant in Sanur, it only seats about 20 guests at a time in the leafy courtyard. The menu takes influences from all over the world but ultimately keeps things simple. What it does, it does well.
As well as serving cocktails, it offers up classic salads, pasta, and meat dishes. More of an oasis than an eatery, Kayu Manis knows that sometimes simple is best.
Sate Ratu – Yogyakarta
This is no tourist trap. Locals will enthusiastically recommend it. Among travellers it is known for it’s friendly and hospitable service as well as a clean and cosy atmosphere. Sate your hunger with the best satay in town.
