Get ready for a major carnival in Tsim Sha Tsui East this summer!  To lure visitors to Hong Kong this sizzling summer holiday, the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) is teaming up with the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Association (HKDBA) to draw out the “Hong Kong Dragon Boat Carnival” – a mega event that runs from 23 to 25 July.  The three-day event will witness actions in the water and on land.  Apart from the heart-racing “Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races”, beer and delicacies, among other exciting elements, will indulge visitors in the convivial summer fiesta.

Mr James Tien, HKTB Chairman, said: “Thirty five years ago, Hong Kong hosted the first international dragon boat race.  The standards set at that time are adopted in dragon boat races held in more than 60 countries and regions today.  To say Hong Kong is the birth place of modern dragon boat races is no exaggeration.  Celebrating Hong Kong’s eminent position in the sport, the HKTB is collaborating with the HKDBA to organise the ‘Hong Kong Dragon Boat Carnival’ in Victoria Harbour.  We hope that the dragon boat races set in the world famous Harbour will attract dragon boat lovers to take part in the event as racers and spectators.  We also hope to enhance the interest of visitors in general to visit Hong Kong, and to gain extensive world-wide media coverage.

HKDBA Chairman Dr Raymond Ma said: “The HKDBA is delighted to partner with the HKTB in organising the ‘Hong Kong Dragon Boat Carnival’.  The mega event will bring the Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races back to the cradle of renowned Victoria Harbour, enhancing the scope and appeal of the races.  The synergy generated by the partnership between the two organisations, on top of the far-reaching global network of the HKTB, will bring Hong Kong’s dragon boat races to a greater audience.  In the long run, the event will be conductive to the development of the dragon boat culture in the world.”

The “Hong Kong Dragon Boat Carnival” will be three days of fun.  In particular, to increase the excitement of the “Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races”, the HKTB will instil creative elements, such as a “Best Costume Award” to encourage racers to wear designed T-shirts during the races.  The HKTB is also planning to organise a charity race for recovered cancer patients to add meaning to the event.

Actions will also take place on dry ground, as the water front in Tsim Sha Tsui East will be transformed into a large-scale carnival.  The area will be decorated to enhance the atmosphere of the “Hong Kong Dragon Boat Carnival”.  The HKTB is also seeking to work with a beer company to create a “Biergarten” where beer drinking competitions, food stalls and music performances will be found to immerse visitors and residents in festivity.  The HKTB hopes to increase people flow in Tsim Sha Tsui East and bring business opportunities to the retail and catering trade partners operating in the area, who are encouraged to organise activities to complement the Dragon Boat Carnival.  Other businesses are also welcome to promote their brands through various forms of sponsorship to the event.

The “Hong Kong Dragon Boat Carnival” is a key HKTB promotional event not only this summer but also throughout “Festive Hong Kong 2010”.  As the global economy recovers and the number of visitors increases steadily, the HKTB is actively driving promotions in the Mainland China and short-haul markets.  It is also co-operating with trade partners to launch itineraries surrounding the “Hong Kong Dragon Boat Carnival” to attract young people and families to Hong Kong this summer.

About Festive Hong Kong 2010

Festive Hong Kong 2010 is the annual marketing theme of the HKTB in 2010-11, which is designed for encouraging visitors to come experience the unique culture, as well as the colourful fusion of Chinese and Western festivities that could only be found in Hong Kong.  Throughout the year, the HKTB will organise a series of mega events, which will be promoted along with the traditional festivals and cultural celebrations, as well as major events launched by third parties.  The HKTB aims to further elevate Hong Kong’s image as the Events Capital of Asia, and create greater business opportunities for the tourism, retail, dining and service sectors of the city.
