Viva Macau eyes speedy return
DEBT-LADEN Viva Macau Airlines hoped to regain its wings by Friday, its chief executive Reg Macdonald told The Standard newspaper in Hong Kong.
The carrier had earlier issued a statement to explain the situation that led to its unexpected grounding over the last weekend after it failed to settle fuel bills.
It said it failed to reach an agreement with Macau's sole fuel supplier, including prepayment for all weekend flights last Friday afternoon, a situation that prompted the Macau government to pull the airline's operator's license. The airline also has an outstanding 200 million patacas (US$25 million) loan with the government.
"Our shareholders had also offered credit guarantees to the supplier. Unfortunately, no agreement could be reached and therefore flights were stopped unexpectedly," said the statement, which came after the airline had been blasted for not doing enough to help stranded passengers.
The termination of 33 flights to six regional points, including Tokyo, Sydney and Hanoi, affected 4,739 passengers. The airline claimed it was in "active contact" to provide refunds.
Despite the carrier's expectations for a quick resumption of services, problems continue to pile on. Macau's civil aviation authorities have received notification from the company leasing aircraft to the carrier that it had terminated the lease contract. The company also requested the authorities to de-register the aircraft.
