The twenties are the best times for traveling. We are young and broke at this ripe age. Most importantly, we are more than willing to spend a night in a cheap hotel, take the cheapest flights, and survive off of hostel breakfasts and dinner.

Our budgets may be low but that doesn’t have to stop us. So, we have compiled eight affordable vacations every young and broke person can take without it carving a huge hole in your wallet. In no particular order:

Palawan, Philippines

The Philippines is an extremely cheap itinerary especially if you are a Canadian travelling from the West Coast. Hostels average about $10 a night. Or, find yourself in a stunning resort on the tropical islands of Palawan.

Machu Picchu, Peru

You can explore the vast amazon jungle or hike the Inca trail to see the beautiful Peruvian beaches! Machu Picchu is Peru’s most well-known attraction. It is a must-see for any curious traveller. Spend less than a thousand dollars for your accommodation, tour and meals.

Phnom Penh, Cambodia

The capital of Cambodia is exotic and attractive. There is Wild West-feel to it with flashy structures stand tall along with the decrepit ones. Be exposed to sounds of all natures like the loud and friendly locals, whizzing motorbikes and bustling bars. You can visit the striking Royal Palace with its traditional Khmer architecture. Look into the past at the Tuol Sleng Museum of Genocidal Crimes. Find excellent deals on clothing and souvenirs at the Russian Market. Hostel beds cost $5 to $6 per night.

New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans is famous on events like Mardi Gras, New Year’s Eve, and Halloween. But actually, it is a fun place to party any time of the year. It’s a unique place in the U.S. with rich history, intriguing culture, delectable food, and a constantly buzzing nightlife scene. Hotels in New Orleans can get quite pricey. Find some hostel options early so they don’t get booked up.

Medellin, Colombia

We all know that Colombia once had a bad reputation for being a dangerous place. But, it has come quite far from the days of Pablo Escobar. Since then, the dollar has strengthened against the Colombian Peso. This is why places like Medellin, Cali and Bogota becomes cheaper to visit.

Bangkok, Thailand

Thailand is one of the cheapest places to go on vacation. The accommodation can be as low as $20 a night. It has been a favorite among college travellers. Winter is the best season for traveling here to get a little warmth and sunshine. Also, there are plenty of adventure sport opportunities here like kayaking, rafting, and even elephant-riding excursions. Look for hostels with shared rooms and bathrooms so you can have extra savings while traveling around Thailand.

Colombo, Sri Lanka

Colombo, the city’s capital, is filled with Portuguese gems, historic buildings, contemporary restaurants, galleries and museums. Fly a kite or just take a walk along the Galle Face Green. Explore the Pettah market to get some spices and dried fish. Last but definitely not the least; you can take a break at Beira Lake, with its calm green waters. You rent a bed for a night for $8 to $20. Moreover, meals, such as classic rice and curry, are relatively cheap and can be found everywhere. They cost around $2 to $9 per serving.

Bali, Indonesia

April, May, September, October are the best months to travel here. In here, food and hotels are extremely cheap. You can survive every day with delicious meals for the equivalent of $1 Canadian.
