Things to do in Thailand

Your list of things to do in Thailand will be long, so plan well. For history lovers, Chiang Mai's Wat Phra and Doi Suthep temples are breathtaking even before you've explored Bangkok's ornate Grand Palace, and the tremendous reclining Buddha in What Pho.

The more adventurous might prefer to stroke wild tigers at Tiger Temple, scuba dive in the Similan Islands, or even study Muay Thai kick-boxing in Bangkok. If all that sounds too much like hard work take a Thai cookery course in Chiang Mai, sunbathe on one of Thailand's breathtaking beaches or indulge in a traditional Thai massage.

Grand Palace – Bangkok

Your first stop in Bangkok should be the Grand Palace. The spectacular complex is the city’s most famous landmark. Contained within are a number of monuments such as the Temple of the Emerald Buddha.
Long since disused as a royal household, the palace is now mostly used to host important ceremonies and events. Visitors must adhere to the dress code that stipulates long pants, sleeves, and no bare feet (that includes thongs/sandals).
The Grand Palace is a treat for photographers and architecture enthusiasts or anyone who enjoys aesthetic grandeur.

Railay Beach – Railay Peninsula

One of Thailand’s biggest drawcards is the quality of its beaches. The country boasts some of the whitest sand, clearest water, and most beautiful rock formations in the world. Railay is among the best the country has to offer.
The distinctive limestone outcrops and adjacent jungle make the place seem like a digitally enhanced paradise. Activities include rock climbing, snorkelling, and good old fashioned lazing on the beach. A small peninsula between Krabi and Ao Nang, only accessible by boat, Railay is worth visiting just to be sure it exists.

Elephant Nature Park – Mae Taeng

Elephants are majestic, mesmeric creatures. Most of us only get the chance to see them in zoos, if at all. The Elephant Nature Park in Northern Thailand is a rescue and rehabilitation centre that gives people the chance to get acquainted with elephants in a natural environment.
Visitors can volunteer or simply participate in a day visit as they learn about the plight of the species and how to care for them. Just 60 kilometres from Chiang Mai City, you can witness the gentle giants up close for an unforgettable experience.

Sanctuary of Truth – Pattaya

A temple made entirely from wood, without nails, the Sanctuary of Truth is a remarkable feat of design. It has been touted as a religious shrine, art installation, and cultural monument all in one.
It contains four wings representing Thai, Khmer, Chinese, and Indian iconography. Far from being an ancient structure, however, it was conceived by local millionaire Lek Viriyaphant in 1981. Despite Viriyaphant’s death in 2000, aged 86, development will continue until scheduled completion in 2050.
Great things are achieved when people start projects they know cannot be finished in their lifetime. Whether it’s a sacred temple or merely the plaything of an eccentric businessman, the Sanctuary of Truth has earned its reputation as a top tourist attraction

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep – Chiang Mai

Surrounded by the beautiful Doi Suthep-Pui National Park, this is one of the most sacred temples in northern Thailand. It is reached by a challenging 306-step staircase, designed for visitors to earn Buddhist merit during the climb. For those happy with their merit levels, there is also funicular access.
Wat Phra That Soi Suthep was established as a monastery in 1383. Today it remains a shrine of great religious significance and solace making for a moving experience, regardless of your spiritual leanings.
